Lizzy Johnson commits to Florida State for 2028: a speed profile and an event question

At a 100-meter track race, a sprinter is measured by two numbers: a personal best and consistency across rounds. In a pool the measurement is harsher, because every start erases everything except the instant a hand touches the wall. At the RAFC Winter Classic in December, Lizzy Johnson walked into finals day with six events on her schedule and left with four lifetime bests: 23.17 in the 50 free, 1:49.61 in the 200 free, 55.83 in the 100 fly and 57.38 in the 100 IM. She won the 50 free, finished runner-up in the 200 free and the 100 IM, took 9th in the 100 free and 50 breast, 11th in the 50 fly and 17th in the 100 fly. Six finals in one session, four personal records, and a place in the sprint group of an ACC program. Some findings do not come from luck; they come from being willing to read the movements the crowd skips over. Johnson announced her verbal commitment on social media, writing that she is overjoyed to continue her academic and athletic career at Florida State University. She thanked coach Goller, coach Ali, her friends, Cynthia and her family, as well as coaches Kyle, Ben and Neal for giving her the chance to make a lifelong dream real, and signed off with the Seminoles' familiar two words: GO NOLES. Johnson is a junior at Windermere High School in Florida and swims year-round for Lakers Swimming. At the FHSAA Class 4A State Championships last fall, as a sophomore, she placed 6th in the 200 free (1:49.90) and 4th in the 100 free (51.13). As a freshman she swam the 50 free (4th, 23.74) and the 200 free (11th, 1:50.23). In November, at RAFC's Almost Turkey meet, she set lifetime bests in the 500 free and 200 fly. Based on my own experience tracking age-group meets in Florida across several seasons, I read the winter results table long before I read any commitment post. One mechanism is worth restating every time a commitment lands: a verbal commitment carries no legal weight. Only when the athlete signs a National Letter of Intent does the agreement become official. The window between those two moments is where every projection can be knocked off course by injury, a growth spurt, or a coaching change. For an athlete announcing two years early, what actually changes hands is priority; most of the value sits in the development curve rather than in the current number. That curve is visible in the data. In the 50 free she went from 23.74 as a freshman to 23.17, a drop of 0.57 seconds, or 2.4 percent across two seasons. In the 200 free the path reads 1:50.23 in the freshman state prelims, 1:49.90 in the sophomore state final, then 1:49.61 in December. In the 100 free, the 51.13 from the state final remains her best short-course yards mark, since she finished only 9th in that event at the RAFC Winter Classic. Reading the 200 free by rhythm sharpens the gap. A 1:49.61 averages 27.4 seconds per 50. Within Florida State's current sprint group, Ioana Stirbu owns 1:44.97, an average of 26.2 seconds per 50. The 4.64-second difference spreads to 1.16 seconds per 50, a margin that conditioning and training volume can close and that technique alone rarely can. Over the shortest distance the gap is thinner. Maryn McDade has gone 22.20 and 49.04; Antonina Biegajlo 22.87 and 50.94; Mary Leigh Hardman 49.51 in the 100 free and 1:48.17 in the 200 free. Against McDade, Johnson trails by 0.97 seconds in the 50 free; against Biegajlo, by 0.30. This is territory one good season can level. The loudest signal, though, sits in the least discussed event. A 57.38 in the 100 IM, set beside 55.83 in the 100 fly and 23.17 in the 50 free, suggests her turns, underwater work and four-stroke range run ahead of her freestyle endurance base. Add the November lifetime bests in the 500 free and 200 fly, and the picture settles: an aerobic profile, not a pure sprint specialist. Data does not judge, but it points me toward the questions other people forget. If a 2.4 percent gain every two years holds in the 50 free, where does she stand in 2028? And which event benefits most from collegiate training volume, where weekly yardage rises and taper cycles change entirely? With a 500 free and 200 fly base, the answer leans toward the 200 free and the 200 IM rather than the 50 free. The conventional read of this commitment is easy to guess: Johnson is a sprinter, she joins a crowded sprint group, and her role in the first two seasons is depth. That read has its own logic, since 23.17 in the 50 free places her behind McDade and Biegajlo. It misses three things. First, the 50 free is the most volatile event and the least transferable when an athlete changes training levels. A swimmer raised on an aerobic base typically improves more in the 200 free than in the 50 free once a college program takes over. Second, there is the structure of the investment. Florida State is taking on an athlete with two high school seasons left, plus four potential college years. That structure resembles a football club paying for an 18-year-old with fewer than 50 top-flight matches: it buys the rights to a curve, not a verified record. The risk is a curve that flattens, turning a scholarship into a cost without return. In college swimming, where scholarship money is capped at the team level, every early commitment is a wager on physical and psychological growth. Third is the variable no model handles well: coaching turnover and injury. An injury is where every analytical model has to bow its head, and at 17, a shoulder or knee issue can rewrite a four-year plan for both the athlete and the program. What matters over the next two seasons sits away from the announcement photo. If the 200 free moves into the 1:47 range and the 100 fly reaches 54 seconds, Florida State gains an IM-capable swimmer worth far more than a pure 50 freestyler. College sport runs on predictions like that, and the winner is usually the program that reads which event will open up, not which event is shining today.
