FIBA Bans Coach Rimantas Grigas for 5 Years for Safeguarding Violation

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced a heavy disciplinary sanction against Lithuanian coach Rimantas Grigas. According to the official press release, Grigas is banned from all basketball-related activities for five years, fined 12,000 Swiss francs, and required to complete a safeguarding course before he can apply for reinstatement. The decision is retroactive to October 27, 2026, when Grigas was provisionally suspended. This means the ban runs until October 27, 2030, removing him from the coaching profession during his peak career years. FIBA stated it collaborated closely with the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) throughout the investigation and disciplinary process. Although FIBA did not disclose the specific allegations, the case is framed under the federation's safeguarding rules. This is the first time FIBA has imposed such a severe penalty on a coach, signaling a tightening of discipline and protection for athletes – particularly minors – in world basketball. The CHF 12,000 fine is modest compared to the income Grigas will lose over five years. The real impact is his inability to work in any basketball role – coaching, consulting, or management. The prerequisite for return after 2030 is completing a FIBA-approved safeguarding course. FIBA reaffirmed its commitment to “build a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved in basketball” and sees this decision as part of its enforcement of safeguarding standards across the system. The LKF, as the national federation, also faces pressure to strengthen internal regulations to prevent similar cases.
